A Dream of Alaska

This is a wild place, a part of Alaska situated within the Ring of Fire. Vegetation seems anchored by the flimsiest of root systems. Buildings teeter on the edges of steep mountains.

In a dream Denali rises up, flings off trees, animals and human beings. Jagged and sharp, it pushes upward, ever higher, propelled by molten fire and lava.

I've painted many versions of The Ancient Stairway. In this one, my son and his wife climb the stairway without fear. They are oblivious to the pitfalls and dangers we all must face.

"Ray's Restaurant"

Seward, Alaska
24 x 18 inches
oil on canvas

What interests me most in this image is the severe, pointed diagonal of the floating dock and the spikes of pilings that anchor it — all with volcanic mountains heaving into the sky just beyond.

"Peckish"

20 x 30 inches
watercolor on paper

Line, pattern, movement and rhythm. Color. Enthusiastic life.

"Nude, Truro"

16 x 16 inches
wax, oil on panel

"Fried Eggs"

12 x 10 inches
pastel on paper

A still life, fried up in a pan, served on paper.

"Vortex”

18 x 18 inches
cold wax, oil, oil sticks, collage on panel

A woman absorbs the impact of a primal betrayal. Her face is a frozen mask. Her body is riddled with wounds. Her world breaks into a sucking vortex and is spit out again into a mayhem of uncontrolled pieces.

"Something In Summer”

16 x 16 inches each
cold wax, oil sticks, oil on panels

"Ways To The Portal”

18 x 18 inches, 16 x 16 inches
cold wax, oil on panel

How do you make your way back from an intolerable place?

A door? A stairway? A bridge? A tank to swim through? A light through high windows? Dissolving stepping stones? A swinging ladder? The Cross?
