Once again, life comes full circle

Many years ago, my mother stood on a pier in New York City and watched her nineteen-year-old cousin sail away to begin a dream life in Paris. You might imagine that my mom was at least a little envious. But my mother had already set sail on her own life. She knew exactly where she and her young family were headed. (Four more children joined the crew in just a few years.) I still admire the unbreakable bond she has maintained all these years with her children.

A few months ago, my husband and I returned to the little village on the shore where I grew up, to care for my mother. She is eighty-nine now, and we all dread the idea of her leaving us. (In her life, she never once left us). But what do I still see in her eyes? That unbreakable connection and her fight to stay with us.

So, if I were to paint her again today, how would I approach it? Where would I start?
